This is a place where we can share information with eachother about the NH Summer Reading Program. We hope that it will allow all of you to share your ideas about books, crafts, decorating ideas, and even a tip or two on how you create a successful program for your library. The majority of the content is found in your manual, but we want to go beyond the manual since many of you already share via e-mails with eachother, this is a way to organize and keep all the information in one spot.

This is an interactive and dynamic site that will provide information about the theme, "G'Day for Reading" and include the contents found in the SRP Manual, links to sites, KBA Roster information and anything else we may find to add.

Look at the various pages, experiment with downloading an attachment, post a reply to a thread or create a new thread and most of all have fun!

Summer Reading Programs result in many benefits to the participants, the library and the community. They are designed to encourage the habit of recreational reading by children and their families during the summer vacation months.

The Benefits of having a Summer Reading Program:

Students who read over the summer retain more of their reading skills and are better prepared for school in the fall.
Involve the youth of your community in positive activities by having them volunteer to help out at your library.
It is good public relations for your library. The Summer Reading Program helps promote library services to the general public.
Encourages children and parents in the habit of using the public library.
Has the potential to convert non-library users into lifelong library users.
Keeps those circulation statistics from dropping during the summer.
Promotes the development of reading and the habit of reading.

Using clipart from this website The clipart is copyright free for NH Librarians and can be used to create small posters to hang up around town. Magnify or reduce the clipart as needed to create handouts, bookmarks, coloring sheets, and letterheads for thank you notes or for anything else that you can imagine. Make a transparency for an overhead projector and trace the clipart onto a wall or large poster. If you wish to use the artwork and you are not a NH Librarian, please contact the Children's Librarians of New Hampshire (CHILIS) for rights and permissions.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The Sept/Oct 2000 issue of COPYCAT (o.p.) has a wonderful section called the “Outback Olympics”.(Australia was the host for the 2000 Summer Olympics).There are 8 different games listed:Echidna roll, kangaroo hop, koala climb, platypus race, emu run, boomerang throw, and crocodile road race.
- Kids can make an Olympic necklace that is in the shape of a boomerang.
- There is a closing ceremonies song.
- Instructions to make koala cupcakes.
- There’s clip art to make signs for all the different games, all the Olympic medals and the pattern for the necklace.
All of the above can be found on pages 13 to 21.
In the same issue, on pages 28 to 35, there is a section called the “Down Under Diary” where kids can make a “Joey Journal”, a booklet that introduces Australia.The booklet can be copied and assembled and used as a resource of information about Australia.

Registration, Recording, Rewards & Publicity

Registration:
Having the children register is a good way to keep track of the number of children participating. Use whatever system is easiest for you and your staff. Plan a big event on registration day, such as a performer or some other special offering. For those children who cannot attend on the first day, keep the registration period open for a few weeks. Be flexible.

Recording:
Write the names of children who register onto cut-outs of Australian maps, or animals from the region. Line them up around the room, up and down walls or attached to strings and hung in strips from the ceiling.

Using maps of Australia, have children travel through the country using an animal die cut, move the animal through the country as the # number of books/time read on them.

Record children’s reading progress on a bulletin board that is decorated with a scene from Australia adding a different animal as they progress.

Divide the number of registered readers in half and give each half a team name that is appropriate for the theme. Chart their progress (# of books or # of minutes) as the weeks go by. See which team will reach their goal first.

Rewards:
Plan an end-of-the-SRP party for your volunteers and for the children who participated in the SRP. Hand out Reading Certificates by someone dressed as an Aussie. Invite the local newspaper to take pictures. Serve refreshments.

During the SRP, reward the children for their efforts with small trinkets related to the theme. Library “bucks” can be earned for reading and used later as “cash” to get a prize or trinket.

Publicity:
Publicity for your SRP is vital. The best way to inform children and parents is through the schools. Try to visit as many classrooms as you can. Catch the children’s attention by wearing a costume, singing a song or performing a skit.

Give them something to remind them of the SRP, such as, bookmarks, fliers, coloring sheets, etc. that has the dates and times of your events. If the schools have a newsletter, ask if they can include your SRP info. Daycares, doctor and dentist offices, town hall, Laundromats and stores are some places to distribute information.

Submit press releases to area newspapers, radio and local TV stations at least 3-4 weeks in advance for all your programs and special events. Use the Sample Press Releases from this manual. They are designed to save you time. Just fill in the blanks and you’re good to go.

Create flyers and have those available at check out, reference and anywhere throughout the library where patrons can see them. Don’t forget - grandparents, aunts and uncles go to the library, too.

Advertise your programs on your library’s website, if you have one.

Setting up your Program

There are a few different things to consider when setting up your Summer Reading Program. We have given you some sample letters (found on this page) and on the next page called Setting up your Summer Reading Program you will find helpful questions, as well as goals and strategies to make your program the best it can be. We have also attached a six-week sample program.

At the bottom of this page you will see a variety of letters that you can use, including a sample business request letter, a letter to parents, sample press release and a thank you letter. They are found as attachments at the bottom of this page which you can download and customize to fit your library's needs. Feel free to use some of the clip art found on the Artwork page to embellish your letters.

Setting up your Summer Reading Program

For those of you who are new to children’s services and Summer Reading Programs, the SAMPLE SRP (see attachment below) can be a life-saver or a jumping-off point for you. Summer Reading Programs can take many forms. Each library will have to decide a structure that best suits the number of children involved, staff size, space and budget.

One way to start planning is to focus on a particular aspect of the theme. What will you emphasize? Pick the aspect of the theme that most appeals to the staff and children of your community.

The program should be designed to appeal to children of all ages, sexes and abilities. Find a way to entice reluctant readers and non-readers into the library. Plan a flexible program for you and the children.

Here are some questions to ask before you begin:

Will the children register for the program? (When, how many and for how long will you register?)
Will you sponsor and run special programs? (How often? Who will run them…? Volunteers? Hired performers?)
Will there be arts and crafts? (Are you “crafty” or do you know someone who is?)
What other activities are offered in your community? Can you coordinate with your town’s Recreation Department, local churches, day camps etc.?)
How will you pay for your program? (Donations from local businesses? Your Friends group?)
Will you use volunteers to help out? (Teens make wonderful helpers and it gives them something to do. Parents can help when you need extra adult supervision or assistance.)
Will you use incentives to encourage the children to visit the library each week? (Small prizes, library dollars, drawings for special prizes)

Whatever you decide to do, remember: The children aren’t as critical as you are. If you are enjoying yourself, they will, too! Just make sure to offer activities that are best suited to you and your staff’s personalities and interests!

SETTING GOALS
Setting appropriate goals will help you to define and plan your SRP. Here are a few suggested goals and ways to implement them.

To encourage children to read for enjoyment	Keep rules and restrictions to a minimum	Expose kids to a wealth of exciting books
To encourage under-served youths to participate	Take your program to them	Hold programs in the park or wherever they hang out
To give kids a safe place to spend their time	Plan program for a lot of kids	Hold book discussions, show movies, play games, setup drop-in crafts
To increase new library users	Advertise in new ways	Visit schools and hang posters, school’s website, school’s newsletter
To publicize the library	Use various media	Local radio, local TV station or newspapers
To increase the number of children who visit the library	Plan a program with frequent check-ins or prizes	Have a game or craft kids can participate in when come to the library

G’day mates! Are you and your readers ready to go down under to the Lucky Country this summer? If not, no worries: we’ve got you covered! G’day for Reading, the 2008 New Hampshire Summer Reading Program is a goer of a theme, so don’t get up a gumtree; take a squiz through this manual for all you’ll need to have an ace summer reading program!

The Summer Reading Program Committee has put together a manual that has something in it for everyone; from the librarian who is planning their first Summer Reading Program to the librarian who’s done so many they can’t remember their first Summer Reading Program! You will find ideas for activities and programs, crafts and puzzles, sample parent letters and press releases, to name just a few. You can use these ideas as is, or use them as inspiration for your own, unique program.

This year’s artwork has been created by cartoonist Stephanie Piro, a resident of Farmington. (Read more about her in this manual!) Your readers will be stoked when they see the bonza artwork on the Summer Reading Program poster and T-shirt, as well as on the reading logs, certificates, and bookmarks. Stephanie has also provided heaps of clip art for you to use in your own publicity!

At the end of the summer, please be sure to fill out the evaluation form found in this manual and return it to the SRP committee. This information helps us in future funding, and lets us know what does or doesn’t work. We need your valuable input in planning future summer reading programs.
